CERULEAN BLUE is a compound of cobalt and tin oxides. A bright sky blue, quite opaque, permanent for all uses. It has a greater opacity than the other blues whose hiding power is due to their deep dark tones. It's full strength shade is a sky blue with a greenish tone. Very good dryer and it's general pigment properties are good.

Charcoal is a Semi-transparent black. Great for toning down areas to create subtle shadows within layers of paint. Used as an under drawing, Charcoal could create a true grisaille if laid down as blocks of tone. Charcoal could also be used for linear under drawing or thinned down as a wash for fast figurative drawings, because it has already been fused with oil, it will create a more stable ground under you painting.

When white is added you get a range of cool greys. Charcoal is a fast drier.

I recommend using it with one of our lead whites.

Flake White (Stiff) has the same properties of our other Lead Whites. The only difference is it contains more pigment in oil. This gives you a thicker bodied, more opaque paint so it's more pastey on the brush. Although it is thicker it still unites with oil to form a buttery paste which has fine brushing qualities. It produces paint films of great durability. fast drier.

FlakeWhite (Lead White) has very desirable properties when ground in oil. It unites with oil to form a buttery paste which has fine brushing qualities. It's also noted for its hiding power & its pleasing tonal characteristics. It produces paint films of great durability. Suitable for artists' use only if well protected in oil, which it is. Under these conditions it is absolutely permanent and should not be used in other mediums. Very fast drier.

Occhuzzie has uncovered a lead white recipe that dates back to the Northern Renaissance period called Flemish White. Heavily used by the great Dutch painters (Rubens, Van Dyck, & Rembrandt to name a few) from the 15th-17th centuries. Flemish White is a very tacky, full bodied paint. Known for its very long ropey qualities, its like working with string cheese. Flemish White works great for areas that you want to leave brush strokes or texture. Rembrandt's self portraits are excellent examples of what you can do with Flemish white.

This is truly a specialty item, it requires a great deal of understanding of the chemistry of painting. I encourage everyone to give Flemish white a try, but remember it will take time, & patients to truly get the most out of this very special product.

Note, one of the characteristics of original lead white is that its light sensitive, not in a negative way. Lead white will brighten in natural light, this is one quality that helped in creating chiaroscuro lighting effects ( the inner glow). So when you first open your jar of paint don't be alarmed if in the center is yellow, its just starved of natural light, stir it in and will lighten back up. Also separation of the oil will occur, do not drain of excess oil, again simply stir it in, the oil is what gives it the wet stringy quality. This is a paint that takes a little extra tending to, but the outcome is well worth it.

Graphite is a opaque shimmery grey/black. Simply ground pencil lead suspended in oil. For best results thin down and use graphite as a wash for fast gestural drawings, or to create a linear under-drawing, even as a grisaille. Because it has already been fused with oil, it will create a more stable ground under you painting. Literally a liquid oil pencil. Use straight out of the jar for a 7B pencil value shade, just add white to create a wide range of cool greys down to a 7H pencil.

Graphite is a fast drier.

I recommend using it with one of our Flake whites.

An opaque cool green, not very strong in tinting power. Absolutely permanent for all purposes and conditions, a well liked color among artist for its pleasing hue. Average drier. A very dense creamy paint, I pack in as much pigment as the oil would allow. This gives you a much higher quality paint, you can feel its density when holding the tube. Great for landscape painting.

Originally a color made in India by heating the urine of cows fed on mango leaves. True Indian yellow has been absent from the market for some time. It has been replaced with a more desirable modern light-fast synthetic pigment. Indian Yellow is a fairly bright, transparent yellow with a low tinctorial power, and has a average degree of permanence. Best used in glazing techniques. Average drying time.

IVORY BLACK is the most widely used black by artist and serves well as an all around black in tinting color. It is a high grade bone black, made by charring bones and recommended as a permanent artist color. It is a very slow drier in oil.
